2D Echocardiogram - Ultrasound

What is a 2D Echocardiogram?

A 2D Echocardiogram (Echo, Cardiac Echo, Cardiac Ultrasound), is an ultrasound assessment of the heart. The 2D Echocardiogram assesses a patient’s heart valves, heart muscle and blood flow

Why perform the Test?

2D Echocardiogram - Ultrasound is performed to evaluate the structure and function of the heart using a series of images and videos.

Preparation for a 2D Echocardiogram

There is no dietary preparation requirements

When you enter the test room patients are required to:

  • Undress to the waist so wear a two-piece outfit and comfortable footwear
  • Women are given a gown to wear

What happens during the 2D Echocardiogram - Ultrasound ?

Imaging will be performed with the lights dimmed.

An Accredited Cardiac Sonographer will place a special probe with ultrasound gel on various parts of the chest wall to view the heart from different angles as you rest on a bed.

There are three main areas from where images are recorded

  • Just to the left side of the sternum,
  • The lower left side of the ribs (both performed with the patient on their left side), and
  • From under the rib-cage (with the patient lying on their back).

Depending on the reason for the scan, the Sonographer may need to obtain images from other areas as necessary.

The Sonographer may ask you to breathe in and hold your breath several times, which is important for recording the best pictures.

Echocardiogram Duration

The test usually takes 45-60 minutes
